Weekly Update

March 14, 2008

Welcome to the third edition of the Weekly Update, a publication of Western United Environmental Services (WUES). Our goal is to provide you with the latest information about WUES and how our organization can help you with your environmental challenges.  If you have any questions or suggestions about what you like on this publication, please feel free to let us know.

Sampling

It is extremely important, now that we are in the midst of chopping and harvesting winter forage crops, that you either pull the sample yourself, or contact one of the WUES’ Environmental Technicians to help you do so. There must be a sample from each application area.  Don’t forget that the sample needs to be brought to the lab no later than five (5) days, as long as it has been stored properly.

~ Another Reminder ~

Liners and covers for ag waste storage course March 25-27 in Fresno - - A three-day course on liners and covers for agricultural waste storage will be held March 25-27 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center, Fresno. The course is being offered by Iowa State University in cooperation with industry specialists. The first and second day of the course will cover compacted clay liners, geosynthetic liners, and permeable and impermeable covers. The third day will include three case studies and associated site tours. Design, installation, and testing methods covered in the course are appropriate for manures, agricultural wastes, industrial wastes, and municipal wastes. This short course is designed for engineers, consultants, regulators, educators, and others who are involved in the selection, specification, design, installation, or testing of liner and cover systems for manure or waste storage systems. The course will focus on the selection, design, installation, and testing of both compacted clay liners and geosynthetic waste storage system liners, as well as flexible membrane cover systems. Demonstrations of wedge welding, extrusion welding, and alternative welding methods will be performed on multiple material types. The conference website includes information about registration, lodging, and a detailed agenda. http://www.ucs.iastate.edu/mnet/linersandcovers/home.html A block of hotel rooms has been held at the Radisson for $84/night.
