Weekly Update

April 18, 2008

Welcome to the Weekly Update, a publication of Western United Environmental Services (WUES).  Our goal is to provide you with the latest information about the WDR’s from the Water Board and how our organization can help you with your environmental challenges.  All previous Updates can be found on our website in the News section.

The people that are here to help YOU!!

Each week we are featuring one of our Environmental Technicians so you can get a better understanding of who they are and how they can assist you.  This article will have frequently asked questions and advice from our Environmental Technicians to help you in complying with the WDRs.  Last week we heard from Ashley Carvajal, who discussed the differences of sampling irrigation water and fresh water.  This week we feature Bruce Goldsmith.

Bruce Goldsmith

Now that I have been out working with dairy producers, we have all come to the realization that complying with the WDRs is not a simple task.  I have two questions that I have been often asked.  Hopefully these answers will help you with this process.

What kind of bottle should I use for the water sample?

Contact one of our “preferred provider” labs about testing your water and let them know how many samples you plan to have tested.  They will provide you with all of the bottles that will be used to hold the water samples.

What can I be doing to move this process (meeting the Waste Discharge Requirements) along?

We are starting to work on the Sampling and Analysis Plan.  This is one of the components of the July 1 report that you cannot do yourself.  In order to complete the report, we will need your updated dairy maps.  Please complete this requirement and mail in your maps now so this requirement can be finished before things get really busy.

Producers, be aware: Important new requirements, deadlines coming soon

No matter how the Dairy Producer decides to comply with the General Order, it is critical to know the regulatory obligations and that it is ultimately the dairy operator’s responsibility to ensure their facility is in compliance. To help with this process, thanks to CDQAP, here is a check list of dates and tasks for the upcoming spring deadlines. The information in italics at the end of each bullet notes where helpful forms and information can be found on the subject in the CDQAP WDR General Order Reference Binder.  Forms and documents can also be found at the CDQAP website at www.cdqa.org.
