Weekly Update

April 25, 2008

Welcome to Weekly Update, a publication of Western United Environmental Services (WUES). Our goal is to provide you with the latest information ababout the WDR’s from the Water Board and how our organization can help you with your environmental challenges. All previous publications of the     Weekly Update can be found in the News section on our website.

The people that are here to help YOU!!

Each week we are featuring one of our Environmental Technicians to give you an opportunity to “meet” them and a better understanding of how they  can assist you.  This article will have frequently asked questions and advice from our Environmental Technicians to aid you in complying with the WDRs.  Last week we heard from Bruce Goldsmith who discussed what kind of bottle is best for storing samples, as well as the next steps in meeting the WDR requirements. This week we are featuring Jenny Mesenhimer.

            Sample, Sample, Sample!!!

The May 3rd deadline for sampling  is  quickly approaching so it

is  important  to  remember  some  key factors when considering

sampling:

Lagoon / Process Wastewater:

This  is  to be done once per quarter during an application event.

This  means  that  every  three  months  when  you  irrigate  with

lagoon water  you  should be pulling a sample.  There is no need

to  pull  a  sample if you will not be irrigating with lagoon water

in a particular quarter.

     Irrigation / Fresh water:

This is an easy one.  Remember the November 3, 2007 deadline for sampling wells?  This will be repeated on an annual basis.  At some point throughout the 2008 year you will need to sample all domestic and agricultural wells again.  However, this does not fall in the May 3rd deadline, it just needs to be done every year at any time throughout the year. If you have already done them or feel the need to do them soon, then that’s great too!  As for canal irrigation it’s even easier! We will be obtaining the Electrical Conductivity and Nitrogen levels from the local irrigation districts where available; so all that is needed is to record the information in the proper place.  If that information is not available from the local irrigation district, then samples need to be collected.

WDR mapping does not require professional certification.

We would like to remind Central Valley dairy producers that mapping requirements for WDRs DO NOT require professional certification and can be done by the producer themselves, however we are happy to prepare your maps for you or assist you in any way with them. These updated maps are an important part of the waste management plan, and must be completed by July 1, 2008, as required by the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board.  The map requirements are not a one day task and because they take some time to complete, we encourage everyone to start now if you haven’t already done so.  If you need assistance or have any questions on the maps or any other aspect of the WDRs, contact Western United Environmental Services or Western United Dairymen for a reliable answer.
